If you’ve ever wanted to check out Saskatoon but weren’t sure the best time to visit, go during Saskatchewan Jazz Fest.
For 10 days each summer (June 23 – July 2), the city of Saskatoon bursts into song as the SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival plays host to hundreds of world class artists. Over 85,000 hungry music fans devour the sounds of jazz, blues, funk, pop, and world music each year, with a program that spans as many genres as it does continents.
Having toured North America and Europe seeing some of the most iconic venues in the world (including Red Rocks), I can justifiably say that Sask Jazz Fest has a world class main stage.
Held along the banks of the South Saskatchewan river with the iconic Bessbrough hotel (AKA a breathtaking castle) as your backdrop, the Bess gardens just might be one of the coolest venues you’ll ever witness in a city. With one of the best free stages (hosting over 80 free shows this year) along with many local venues hosting a range of live music every day + night (a total of over 120 total shows) Sask Jazz has become the second largest festival of its kind in Western Canada and has the perfect balance of local talent and world famous acts.
If you’re looking for a ‘sit down and hang’ experience at the main stage be sure to bring your lawn chair/blanket and show up early as seating areas do fill up. Bring cash for the ticket bar (and make sure you’re in the right line) along with an empty stomach as food trucks and vendors are around every corner with delicious smelling Saskatoon cuisine waiting to fill you up.
