Here’s What You Missed At Nuit Blanche Saskatoon

Photo: Jordyn Ferguson

Nuit Blanche has come a long way since its origins in Paris in the 80’s. First held in Canada in Montreal in 2003 and now hosted by 10 cities across Canada, the annual all-night event is one of the most accessible opportunities to celebrate contemporary creative culture in Canada. While the major cultural hubs such as Toronto and Montreal receive attention for their iterations of the event, each Nuit Blanche has its own personality and some of Canada’s smaller cities are putting on the most unique and engaging events. One such city is Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Nuit Blanche Saskatoon is a free, all-ages, night-time arts festival. October 1, 2016, marked the third Nuit Blanche held in Saskatoon, and explored a unique theme, ‘Creative Cuisine as Agent of Change.’  Over 20 unique art installations attracted over 10,000 people to Victoria Park, in the revitalized neighbourhood of Riversdale, to see how artists could explore food and its accompanying culture.

Here are our favourite installations from Nuit Blanche Saskatoon 2016:

1. Let Them Eat Pie by Adrian Stimson

Have you ever been to a bison pie cooking class while a movie was projected on the walls? Neither had we.

2. Food(Truck) by Jordan Schwab and Patrick Bulas

Give them your food order and they printed off images of your meal on site. Now that is what we call service.

3. Polar Pops and Pizza Boxes by Aden Bowman Collegiate

Have you every thought about how much you contribute to the global waste problem? This structure made from recycled styrofoam cups and paper boxes helped us all do just that.

The Bridges Arts Movement (BAM) always has an installation worth talking about. This year was nothing short of that.
