You may know of Dale MacKay from his victory on Top Chef Canada, or you may have heard of the story of his departure from Vancouver, B.C. to open restaurants in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Dale is the owner of two of the province’s most awarded restaurants, Ayden Kitchen & Bar and Little Grouse On The Prairie. If that wasn’t enough, he’s also opening his third downtown Saskatoon restaurant on April 11th, Sticks & Stones, a modern take on Korean and Japanese cuisine complete with an amazing sake menu. We recently caught up with Dale to find out his favourite restaurants and dishes in Saskatoon.
It’s kind of like a greasy spoon or diner. I go there for breakfast on the weekends and it’s great because it has diner pricing. They still make all their own sausages and bacon which is really good. The Bridge Party Breakfast is the go to: Eggs, hash browns, french toast, and bacon, ham, or sausage.
Recommended Dish: The Bridge Party Breakfast
Where: 515 20th Street West
Hours: 8am-4pm Mon-Wed, 8am-930pm Thurs-Sat
Una Pizza is a wine and pizza bar with really nice decor. It’s not just in Saskatoon. They have a location in Calgary as well. But it’s a really nice place to have a glass of wine and pizza. The fromage and honey pizza (4-maggi) is my favourite.
Recommended Dish: 4 Maggi Pizza
Where: 707 Broadway Ave
Hours: 11:30am-10pm Sun-Thurs, 11:30am-12am Fri-Sat
Keos is my go to Thai and Vietnamese spot in Saskatoon. They’ve got a lot of great food on the menu but I usually go with the Tom Kha Kai, which is like Tom Yum with sticky rice and chilli chicken and coconut, and their Super Roll, which is a fresh roll with a fried spring roll inside.
Recommended Dish: Tom Kha Kai
Where: 1013 Broadway Ave
Hours: 11:00am-3pm, 4pm-8pm Tues-Thurs, 11:00am-3pm, 4pm-10pm Fri-Sat, 4:30pm-8pm Sun-Mon
Eastern Dumpling is a little hole in the wall but it’s good. Terrible service but the dumplings really make up for it. You should take my recommendation and go and try the Pork and Leek dumplings… But actually don’t expect service there.
Recommended Dish: Pork and Leek dumplings
Where: 135 20 St W.
Hours: 11am-9pm Mon-Tues and Thurs-Sun, closed on Wed
Can I say one of my own restaurants? I eat at Little Grouse all the time. Usually whatever is fresh that day, but I particularly like the fresh pasta with wild mushroom and cannelloni.
Recommended Dish: Daily feature or Wild Mushroom Cannelloni
Where: 167 3 Ave S
Hours: 5:30pm-12am Tues-Sun, closed on Mon
