If you’ve ever had the sudden urge to walk the entire span of our beautiful nation, you’ll soon be able to act on it. By 2017, The Great Trail is set to be the longest car-free route on the planet, spanning over 24,000 kilometres from British Columbia to Newfoundland. Whether you’re looking to hike, bike, paddle, swim or even snowmobile, you’ll be able to do it all on The Great Trail.
Work on the Trans Canada Trail began in 1992 and is currently 87 per cent complete at just over 20,000 kilometres. Once finished, the trail will connect all of Canada’s major cities throughout every province and territory.
Mile 0 begins in either Victoria, British Columbia or St.John’s, Newfoundland
Feeling inspired to explore? It may be easier than you think! With 80 per cent of Canadians living within 30 minutes of the trail, it’s as accessible as it is breathtaking. Take a look below at some first hand encounters of the different terrains you can experience from coast to coast on the trail!
Score these views in Canmore
They’ll leave you wanting MORE
Drink in the the views (and the wine) from the top of Kettle Valley
Wine tour, valley tour, repeat
Experience lakeside sunsets
Paddle the Northwest Territories
And find out how to correctly pronounce Tsiigehtchic
Marvel at the jade waters of Coquihalla Canyon
And maybe even take a dip?
Stop for a snack on the Les Florents Trail
And imagine being a hobbit overlooking The Shire
Cross the Point Pelee boardwalk
And listen to the beautiful songbirds who call it home
Spot a Heron on the Salt Marsh Trail
But remember, never feed the wildlife
Be brave on the cliffs of Nova Scotia
The views will be worth it
I get a lot of weird or startled looks from people when I just pop out of the trees back onto the trail but you can’t find the raw views like this without getting smacked by some branches and eaten alive by Mozys. It’s best to break away from the crowds and blaze your own trail, That’s the beginning of the unforgettable stories. #wanderlust #adventureanywhere #transcanadatrail #tct #thegreattrail #backpacking #hiking #lgcanada #lgg3
