We know, we know, Alberta isn’t the first place that pops into your head when you are thinking yoga and vegetarian food. But, it should be. Sure, British Columbia is known for its om-centricity, but Alberta’s inspiring mountain views make it the perfect place to practice your mountain pose. Roll up your mat, head west to Calgary, and borrow our itinerary for the best three-day yoga road trip you’ll ever take.
Day One: Calgary
Yoga: Take a rooftop class at Junction 9 Yoga and Pilates on 9 Ave. Check out the studio’s Twitter and Facebook accounts to see updates on when one of their wide variety of classes will happen up on the roof. When the weather’s nice, it’s a pretty regular event—with a pretty incredible view
Eat: The Coup on 17 Ave SW offers a big selection of really great vegetarian breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. Try the chili-dusted watermelon and cucumber salad, the tempeh shwarma, or the Tandoori cauliflower “wings”. As a bonus, The Coup has an amazing cocktail menu with drinks like the Kombucha Gimlet: schizandra berry, rose, citrus, vodka & elderflower liqueur, topped with hibiscus rose kombucha. Um, yes.
In the morning, drive: Calgary to Canmore (1 hour and 24 minutes)
Day Two: Canmore
Yoga: Sign up for one of Canmore Hot Yoga’s one-of-kind aerial yoga classes. He in a regular temperature room, the traditional Hatha classes incorporate suspended yoga hammocks that allow for a yin-like practice that uses gravity to help your body get into some really advanced poses you might not normally be able to do. The drop-in price is just $18.
Eat: Pre-yoga, we suggest a smoothie at Mountain Juice Cafe. Afterwards, head to Communitea for their veg-option-heavy breakfast and lunch menus. We love the Yoga Bowl (obviously) with avocado added on. At night, the spot turns into a venue for live music. Check out their lineup here.
Stay: Owned by a Canadian Olympic Medal Winner and a World Cup Champion, The Paintbox Lodge is the coziest place to stay in Canmore. Travel pro tip: their cabin-like rooms go for a special price if you book one for mid-week and your stay comes with a complimentary breakfast featuring frittata or quiche, house-made granola, yogurt, muffins and preserves, homemade sourdough, fruit and a latte.
In the morning, drive: Canmore to Lake Louise (1 hour)
Day Three: Lake Louise and Banff
Do some early morning lakeside meditation or get in a nice hike in beautiful Lake Louise before you get back in the car for the trip to Banff.
Drive: Lake Louise to Banff (42 minutes)
Eat: Satisfy post-hike hunger with lunch at Nourish on Bear St. in Banff. This vegetarian restaurant has tonnes of vegan, nut-free, and wheat-free options too. Our fave is the Mac & Squeeze—gnocchi in coconut and smoked paprika sauce served with kale chips or the shareable Holy Moly Shroom Ravioli.
Yoga: Perfect your tree pose at the Sally Borden Fitness facilities in the Banff Centre where there are daily yoga classes, spin classes, a massive climbing facility, and a glassed-in pool with a view of the wooded mountains. A one-day membership is $15 to access all of the facilities. You can also check out one of the hatha, flow, yin, ashtanga, or restorative drop-in classes at Rocky Mountain Yoga for $18.
Drive: Back to Calgary (one hour and 22 minutes)
